Discern is a personal research instrument for practice. Two perspectives sit alongside each other inside one tool, and both belong to the same practitioner.

What it is

A small studio building a focused product. Four tabs in the app, a curated Library, and a journey that stays the same shape every time: choose, run, observe, read, decide.

Spiritual perspective

Lived experience is treated as a first-class observation. The free-text note is yours; the wording stays yours; nothing is rewritten for you.

Scientific perspective

Each Library entry sets out what the practice is, what it claims, and what the evidence says, with sources cited. We avoid medical claims and say so when the evidence is mixed or thin.

Why we built it

We wanted a structured way to test a practice in our own lives and see what the pattern looked like across weeks and months. Choose a practice from the Library. Start an Experiment. Observe daily with sliders and notes. Read the signals and patterns in Insights. Compare, adjust, continue, pause, or try something else. That is the whole loop, and the app stays out of the way around it.

Most apps in this space either teach a single practice or count your streaks. Discern does neither. It is a personal research instrument for practice, designed for the meeting point between scientific method and spiritual practice. The scientific lens looks for signals and patterns across observations; the spiritual lens listens to lived experience. Both belong to you. The decision about what is meaningful, and what to do next, stays yours.

No streaks, no points, no algorithmic feed. Just the work, an honest record of how it landed, and the language to compare it with what others reported.

What we believe

Discern does not tell you what works. Each Library entry sets out what the practice is, what it claims, and what the evidence says, with sources cited. The one judgement that matters is yours, made over time, in your own life.

We use the language of "you reported" and "participants reported" rather than the over-claiming voice that rings false. We avoid medical claims. When the evidence is mixed or thin, we say so.

How the Library is curated

Every practice and concept in the Library is reviewed by Candid Maverick before it is published. Experimenters can propose new entries and vote on proposals while subscribed. Donors hold a permanent vote on what gets prioritised next. The shape is closer to a small studio than a marketplace. It moves deliberately on purpose.

Privacy and your data

Your observations belong to you. Use Export your data in Settings to download everything you have logged as a JSON bundle, and delete your account at any time. We do not sell data, run third-party analytics SDKs, or feed your notes into a model. The full detail is in the Privacy policy.
